چکیده

We report up to 5000 days of VRI photometry, from a robotic photometric telescope, of 34 pulsating red giants, namely, TV Psc, EG And, Z Psc, RZ And, 4 Ori, RX Lep, UW Lyn, h Gem, m Gem, w Aur, V523 Mon, V614 Mon, HD 52690, Y Lyn, BC CMi, X Cnc, UX Lyn, RS Cnc, VY UMa, ST UMa, TU CVn, FS Com, SW Vir, 30 Her, a Her, V642 Her, R Lyr, V450 Aql, V1293 Aql, d Sge, EU Del, V1070 Cyg, W Cyg, and m Cep, as well as a few variable comparison stars. V, R, and I variations are generally in phase. The length and density of the data enable us to look for variations on timescales ranging from days to years. We use both power-spectrum (Fourier) analysis and autocorrelation analysis, as well as light-curve analysis; these three approaches are complementary. The variations range from regular to irregular, but in most of the stars, we find a period in the range of 20–200 days, which is probably due to low-order radial pulsation. In many of the stars, we also find a period which is an order of magnitude longer. It may be due to rotation, or it may be due to a new kind of convectively induced oscillatory thermal mode, recently proposed by P. Wood.

Long Secondary Periods and Binarity in Red Giant Stars

Observational arguments supporting the binary explanation of the long secondary periods (LSP) phenomenon in red giants are presented. Photometry of about 1200 semiregular variables with the LSP in the Large Magellanic Cloud are analyzed using the MACHO and OGLE photometry. For about 5% of these objects additional ellipsoidal-like or eclipsing-like modulation with the same periods as the LSP is ...

Long-Period Variability in o Ceti

We carried out a new and sensitive search for long-period variability in the prototype of the Mira class of long-period pulsating variables, o Ceti (Mira A), the closest and brightest Mira variable. We conducted this search using an unbroken light curve from 1902 to the present assembled from the visual data archives of five major variable star observing organizations from around the world. We ...

A Search for Planets in the Old Open Cluster NGC 6791 ⋆

We describe the results of a search for transit-like events caused by giant planets occulting stars in the old, metal-rich open cluster NGC 6791 based on BV I-colour photometry from eight nights of observations with the 2.54 m Nordic Optical Telescope. To extract the light curves we have used both PSF photometry (daophot) and the difference imaging technique (isis). We have re-analyzed observat...

M75, a Globular Cluster with a Trimodal Horizontal Branch. Ii. Bv Photometry of the Rr Lyrae Variables

We present new BV CCD photometry, light curves, and ephemerides for 9 previously known, 29 newly detected RR Lyrae variables and one newly detected variable of an unknown type in the globular cluster M75. The photometry used for the detection of the additional variables was obtained with the image subtraction package ISIS. The data were acquired on an observing run in July 1999 and range over 7...

Clusters AgeS Experiment . RR Lyr Variables in the Globular Cluster NGC

We present V and B-band CCD photometry of 35 RR Lyr stars in the southern hemisphere globular cluster NGC 6362. Fourier decomposition of the light curves was used to estimate the basic properties of these variables. From the analysis of the RRc stars we obtain a mean mass of M = 0.531 ± 0.014 M⊙, luminosity logL/L⊙ = 1.656 ± 0.006, effective temperature Teff = 7429 ± 20, and helium abundance Y ...
